Teeth whitening is a process widely used to lighten discoloration of teeth caused by extrinsic stains like those caused by drinking excessive coffee, tea, cola and red wine; or from smoking. The aging process also can stain and darken your teeth.

Teeth whitening is primarily divided into chairside whitening systems and home whitening systems. The procedure is mainly carried out by the use of either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in various concentrations. Certain light sources or laser machines may be used to activate the peroxide material. As the peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin to bleach the stained substances, leaving the tooth structure undamaged.
